One of the most interesting things about a character, and having a really good concept of your character is knowing what they will or will not do. For years I did magic that really didn’t fit me. It took a long time, and a lot of growing pains, but I am comfortable with my character to the point that I can look at an effect and determine whether or not it fits.
Some tricks just don’t work for me. In particular, I try to avoid tricks that are too neat or too handled. But the really important point is, I can tell exactly which trick, when reading, will or will not fit. That’s not to say I’m 100% on this. Often I will go back a few weeks, or months, maybe even years later, and a previously overlooked trick will become a must do piece. But, only if I feel it fits my character and the presentation works with it too. With the magic you do. Ask yourself, would I (or your character) actually perform this?
